There are three stages to creating a message:
- i) Choose the most powerful desire that can possibly be applied to your product.
- ii) Acknowledge that desire, reinforce it, and/or offer the means to satisfy it, in a single statement in the headline. This headline is the bridge between the target market and your product.
iii) And then you take the series of performances (benefits) that are built into your product (what your product does) and you show your audience how these product performances undeniably satisfy their desire.
Your ad always begins with your market and leads that market inevitably toward your product. The beginning of your ad— your headline—is the first step in this process and is based entirely on the answer to three questions:
- What is the desire that creates this market? (wants/needs/pain points)
- How much does the target market already know about how your product satisfies this desire? (State of Awareness.)
- How many other products have been presented to them before yours to satisfy this desire? (State of Sophistication).
